Part of the MRROS (Margaret River Region Open Studio) event, visit contemporary jeweller EVELYN HENSCHKE at JahRoc Galleries and watch her create exquisite glass bead and pearl jewellery.
Evelyn is a classically trained jeweller and goldsmith and did her training in Germany as a mature student, spending the previous 10 years working as a Gestalt Psychotherapist. Her artistic talent was immediately apparent to her internationally recognised teachers, and it was during her work experience with Linney’s Jewellers in Broome that she fell in love with the lustre of pearls, and the Australian lifestyle.
After competing her training and settling in Broome, Evelyn teamed up with Linney’s to produce a range of jewellery that combined her glass beads with Broome Pearls. This was a highly successful venture, creating recognition for Evelyn as an artistic jeweller in Australia.
Evelyn has taken the age old tradition of lamp fired Bohemian Glass Bead making to a new level, with her artistic eye she teams up shapes and colours in combination with South Sea Pearls creating individual jewellery that is hard to resist. Evelyn is passionate about keeping this craft alive, importing precious glass rods from New Gablonz, the Germany post war centre for this vanishing art form.
With many cheap glass production options on the market, Evelyn prefers to keep the tradition alive, uses age old formulas to create the colours in her beads, formulas that have been handed down through the generations. It is these recipes that produce colours that replicate semi-precious stones of nature, such as Amber, Ruby, Garnet and even Emerald.
Take this opportunity to watch Evelyn create her glass bead jewellery and ask questions about her craft. Evelyn will have a large collection of already made bracelets, lariats, necklaces which is a great opportunity to sift through and select the perfect colour combination for you.
